Homing pigeons are given a training period to familiarize themselves with the earths landmarks over which the race will be held, they are then released simultaneously (thousands of pigeons per race) at a central location, as they return to their home loft's their time is recorded electronically.

 

Today pigeons are used extensively in research to understand how birds are able to navigate over long distances.

 

Pigeons have small heads, short necks, stout bodies with short legs. Pigeons live in trees and feed on seeds, fruit, acorns and insects. They build loose almost flat nests of weeds, twigs, bark and straw. During breeding pigeons normally lay one or two eggs.Natural enamies are snakes and birds of pray depending on the continent they live. There are over 200 kinds of domesticated breeds of pigeons world wide - they vary in colour and size.
